Uitleg interpreteren/ Interpret explanation

In mijn oneindige naieviteit heb ik zojuist op de vraag 'wat is dat?' (waarbij gewezen werd op een kruis, staande op een graf) een poging gedaan om de oudste, vier jaar, uit te leggen wat 'dat' is.
'Dat is om aan te geven dat degene die daar ligt, gelovig is', heb ik het vaag gehouden. Maar deze jongedame van 4 geeft niet zomaar op.
'Waar gelovig in?' komt er weer.
'Gelovig in God', begin ik, 'er zijn mensen die in God geloven en die willen dat graag laten zien door zo'n kruis op hun graf te zetten'. Het is een poging. Het lijkt te werken, want even is het stil. Ze laat m'n hand los en huppelt in haar eentje wat verder. Een beetje als een paard, want ze is dol op die dieren. Onderweg nog meer graven, vrijwel allemaal met kruis. Een meter of wat verder stopt ze ineens, draait ze zich om, en brult me vanaf daar toe:
'Ik geloof in PAARDEN!'


In my infinite naivete I just got back to the question of 'what is that?' (the little arm pointed a crucifix on a grave) by trying to explain what 'that' really is.
'That is to point out that the one in there, is a believing person', I answer vagely. The young lady of 4 years old is not that easily satisfied.
'Believing in what?' is the reply.
'Believing in God,' I begin, 'there are people who believe in God and they would like to show that by putting a crucifix on their grave'. I am only trying here. It does seem to work, because she fell quiet now. She lets go of my hand and skips and hops off on her own. A bit like a horse, since she is very fond of those animals. Down the lane of the graveyard. She looks at all the graves she passes, most of them with a crucifix, it being a catholic graveyard. After a few skips and hops, she all of the sudden stops, turns around, yelling at me:
'I believe in HORSES!'
